The Apple /// Bibliography is up to 89K at this writing and growing. A little more slowly than in past months but growing nevertheless. During my dischould be self-explanatory. As an additional note, the ATUNC Newsletter is an excellent publication, and you can join that group for $20.00. Their address is 220 Redwood Highway #184, Mill Valley, CA. 94941. A listing of their articles is alsich he is asking for renewals now to see if he will continue publication). Note that in the following listing, I have assigned Norris as the author in all cases where, in the publication, there was no author listed. Otherwise, everything shing a new version of the magazine again and is asking $45.00 per year for a quarterly publication. However, I would say don't waste your money until we really see something in hard copy. Better to support Frank Moore and his /// Magazine (for whh address Don Norris could be located at. That question was resolved when the set of Gazettes I had ordered finally arrived from the Clayton, Missouri address. Norris says you can still get back copies for $30.00. He also says he plans to begin publisntributed to the end of the earlier two groups. In any case, there are a number of excellent articles in the Gazette. I have donated a complete set to the WAP Office for all to read and enjoy. I had mentioned last month that I was unsure whico died and was succeeded by the Apple Three Users of Northern California (ATUNC), which got started in July of 1985. If I remember what an ATUNC member told me awhile ago, politics and the loss of support for the /// by Apple was what coened to the Original Apple ///rs, except that the group disbanded. By the November edition of the publication, the organization's name had changed to the Business Apple Group (although the Original Apple ///rs logo was still there as well). BAG alsed one of the original Apple /// user groups. Don Norris was its president and publisher of the magazine. All total, the group managed to publish nine editions. It ceased publication in March, 1984. It's hard for me to say just what happen Apple Gazette. It was the publication of the Original Apple ///rs in the San Francisco Bay area. You may recognize that group...we will have a couple of their public domain disks in the /// Diskiteria. The Original Apple ///rs were indeompared to the ][ or the Mac there is still no contest...). At last count it was up to 640 articles! Anyway, this month's bibliographic listing is for another magazine/newsletter that bit the dust some time ago. I mentioned it last month...the Ophave to worry your disk was updated the day after you purchased it. The Bibliography project has grown much larger than I ever thought it would, and certainly it contains more articles than I thought ever really existed for the /// (although c@BCDEFGHIussions with Al Lambert about how to release this information to you, we've decided that the /// Diskiteria will receive an update of the Bibliography every six months or so. That way, you will be able to use the information and not o in the Bibliography and a copy of all their back issues is on disk and in our Diskiteria. I've been working on a "Best of ATUNC" disk and will have it ready for Al shortly. I'm also hoping to get complementary copies of the newsletter sent to the WAP office. ATUNC's Newsletter has been reprinting a couple of this author's articles in recent editions, by the way. OPEN APPLE GAZETTE (NOTE: NORRIS IS NO LONGER AT THE CLAYTON, MO. I'd been drawn to this former elementary school thanks to a simple postcard in the mail. "COMPUTER SOFTWARE AND EQUIPMENT DISPOSAL NOTICE" it announced. "Consolidation sale of comand hardware, and more importantly, what they do. The other thing one must watch out for here is that not everything is new. One fellow member of the /// SIG saw a plastic wrapping machine being used, an indication that one must use care, and not deals if...and it's a strong if... you are very careful and know exactly what you want ahead of time. I discovered it was a good idea not only to bring a calculator, but also my Apple /// and ///+ Resource Guide which lists what's available in software 100 to upgrade my 1.1 version to 2.0. For that, I can live with 1.1 right now. And you certainly can't blame the dealers for trying to get as much of a return on their investment as possible. The moral of the story is this: these sales can be goode 1.1 version. I had only recently gotten a price of $149.00 for the 2.0 version from the dealer where I originally purchased my ///. I paid 20 cents on the dollar for the 1.1 version. That was a very good deal. On the other hand, Apple wants a cool $ther than the usual store discount price, it took the second and perhaps the third day of the sale (when the discount was 60%) that bargains really began to surface. The Apple Writer /// software was a good example. It's price was listed at $275.00 for th or hardware was coded with a dealer identification number so that the dealer could be paid according to what was sold. Everything not sold at the end of the sale was returned to their respective dealers) So by taking a percentage off list price ra commercial auctioneer who set this up, Ronald Rasmus, explained the dealers were told to mark the software at their discretion, since the sale prices would be based on them. Thus it was in the dealers own interests not to discount. (Each piece of software some Quark software for Word Juggler which I bought (and later sold to a fellow ///'er). But while excited about being in this computer candy store, I was sobered by the fact that all of the material offered for sale was marked at list price. Thes were rather limited. And I had to dig through lots of other Apple software to find it. But I did find the 1.1 version of Apple Writer ///, which I bought. There was also Visicalc, Quickfile, the BPI Business series and some training packs. I even foundd things for the taking, including software for all the Apple family members, IBM, etc. There was even an Apple /// for sale at (about) $1200.00 "firm" (and thus no takers). Since there never was a lot of really commercial /// software, my selection Eight PM the final night of the sale, expecting everything to be gone. I was wrong. In fact, I was pleasently surprised at the volumn of software (primarily) and hardware that was still left. A lot of it was "junk software" but there were still some goo was one sale I could not miss. But being one always on the lookout for the best price, I decided to gut it out until the last day of the initial sale's week in Maryland (the sale would move to Virginia after that). So there I finally was.or sale would start at 30 percent off the first day...and plunge to 80 percent off the fifth. Now that was a bargain! And being the proud owner of an Apple /// (and knowing how difficult software will be to get for Apple's poor little outcast) I knew thisputer inventories and miscellaneous from over 35 Washington area computer retailers and distributors." And while the headlines were enticing, it was the announcement a bit further down that was the real clincher: the software and hardware offered fbe afraid to ask about something under any circumstances (that is, make sure there are diskettes in the package, etc.). One must also remember that there is no support provided. No refunds. No nothing. It's strictly cash and carry with a strong dose of buyer beware thrown in. I should mention at this point that Mr. Rasmus and his employees (including some family members) were generally helpful and courteous, especially considering the amount of material they had to deal with and the length of the ess in Missouri. During a phone conversation, Norris, the former President of the Business Apple Group (which was affiliated I'm told at one time with the defunct Original Apple ///er's group) told me he was planning to begin publishing a new magpublisher, Don Norris, told me in mid-August that the nine back issues of the magazine could still be obtained for $30.00. However, his most recent San Francisco phone number has been disconnected and I have been unable to reach him at the forwarding addry the way. See the July, 1985 WAP Journal for more details on what's available. At this point, I was all ready to tell you about the Open Apple Gazette. There will be more of these sales (call 703-370-5760 for more information), but are they worth the effort, time and money? Again, if one is careful, and knows what to look for, the answer is a definite yes. Did Iazine in "two to three months." He said at the time it would cost $45.00 per year (published quarterly). Norris also had his own consulting firm, called the /// Support Service which offered help to Apple /// users on a fee basis. At this point, I can not recommend you send Norris any money for either the back issues or a subscription until more information is forthcoming about his address and plans. I have decided not to print the "current" information because it can not be confirmed (OK...OK..it's hare the results with you in a future article (along with the results of a survey sent to all of them).
