Check for "SLIP", or "PPP" on the services line. While I have included all sites for which I have complete information, this liwell. Generally, you need only a modem and terminal or terminal emulator to access these systems. Check for "shell", "bbs", or "menu" on the "services" line. Other providers connect you directly to the Internet via SLIP or PPP when you dial in. For thend other BBS lists. Some of these providers offer time-shared access to a shell or BBS program on a computer connected directly to the Internet, through which you can FTP or telnet to other systems on the Internet. Usually other services are provided as you need email or USENET access, but *don't* need ftp or telnet, you have many more public access systems from which to choose. Public access systems without ftp or telnet are *not* listed in this list, however. See the nixpub (alt.bbs, comp.misc) list aist. It is a list of Internet service providers offering public access dialins and outgoing Internet access (ftp, telnet, etc.). Most of them provide email and USENET news and other services as well. Compuserve Packet Network ------------------------- You do NOT have to be a Compuserve member to use the CPN to dil-list groups one can join. In addition, Virginia Pen carries many Usenet News Groups which cover a variety of subjects. To access telnet from UNIX, simply type telnet
example: telnet capaccess.org telnet nyx.cs.du.edu telnet grind.isca.uiowa.edu This will enable you to log in to the computer at the other end as if you were sitting at it, no matter where it might be. Most telnettable sites will not log in unauthorized users, although the three listed above will allow y Zmodem offers automatic resumption of previously interrupted file transfers. Also, most communications software supports automatic Zmodem file transfers, where you needn't type anything in while the file is being sent. Once you have recieved your file ome computer, first type "sz" and then you will see a list of commands scroll by. Typing "sz" followed by the filename will send the files to your home computer by Zmodem protocol. While there are ways to send by Xmodem and and Kermit protocols as well, onlname in quotes. Once you have finished with the host ftp site, type "quit" and you will return to your home directory on Virginia Pen. The "ls" or "dir" command will display the names of the files you have downloaded to it. To recieve the files on your hohis, just type "bin" and you're all set. If you want to reset to plain text sending again, type "asc" and UNIX will reset to ASCII send. Once again, if you type in the name of a directory or program that you see is there, but unix doesn't, try putting the rectory on Virginia Pen. If you want to download a file to your home directory, use the "get" command. If the file is a program or graphic of some sort (anything but a plain text file), you will need to set UNIX on binary send before you "get" it. To do ttype: get README |more and the file will display itself. Press spacebar to continue reading from screen to screen, or "q" to interrupt and stop the flow of text. If you type: get README without the pipestem and "more", the file will be sent to your home diby the directory name. Example: cd pub Then you can type "ls" or "dir" to see what is in it. To move back up a directory type "cdup" and you're there. To read a text file on line, use what is called the "pipestem." Example: To read a file called "README" nd of files they are (generally, they are either directories -- "dir" -- or text files -- "txt". Most of the good stuff for downloading at an ftp site will be in the "pub" directory -- sometimes somewhere else. To move into a directory type "cd" followed s will do, such as "revry@pen.k12.va.us" (which is the Virginia Pen address). Once logged on, you will see the unix prompt. Typing "ls" will give you a listing of files. Typing "dir" will give you not only a listing of files, but also will tell you what ki ftp unlvm.unl.edu ftp wiretap.spies.com ftp ftp.apple.com ftp grind.isca.uiowa.edu When you get the log-on prompt at the other end, sign on with "anonymous" -- when you are asked for a password, your full e-mail addresands for File Transfer Protocol. Also, nyx10 (available to registered nyx users) has irc chat available. Irc (internet relay chat) is a method of conducting live on-line conversations with people all over the globe. Any evening, there are hundreds online registration or direct booting (cap access is a free service with local dial-in from DC area exchanges, but now has a one time $25 sign-up fee). Nyx is worth registering for. It has a complete collection of the estimated 6000 usenet news groups, ann your home computer, you will want to clear it out of your home directory with the "rm" (remove) command. Type: rm filename and it will be cleared. This is necessary because space is at a premium on Virginia Pen, and storing large files for extended periods of time will get the system administrators upset. Of the ftp sites listed above, one of the most interesting is wiretap.spies.com, which contains the Gutenberg Project files, a huge collection of literature and reference books (all public domain) free from an Apple II, but it can be done! From unix, create a directory by typing mkdir public html This will create an empty directory called public html. Go into it by typing "cd public html" and then type dir. You will see an empty folder. Then you can web sites to visit, you may want to go to my web page. To get there, type "g" and go to: http:/www.pen.k12.va.us/~revry Have fun! ============================================================================== To create your own web page is very trickys, be certain that you have chosen "kermit" instead of "xmodem" as your protocol of choice on VaPen's user preferences menu. Xmodem often puts in unecessary control characters in your downloaded text files, while Kermit doesn't. For a list of interesting you find interesting, sometimes you cannot capture it with scrollback and you must either back up and download them by pressing "d" on the pointer or else use your screen capture mode (on Proterm, it's open-apple-c). To access your bookmarks at any time from lynx, press "v" and you will be greeted by a list of them. You then can point your way to any site on the list by using your arrow keys. Many of the sites you go to wilweb is to use a resource like the WebCrawler. From Lynx, type the letter "g" and at the "go:" prompt, type: http://webcrawler.cs.washington.edu From the WebCrawler, you can type in any subject, and get up to 25, 50, 100 or 500 site pointers in response. based navigation tool for the WWW. To describe it would fail to do it justice. Needless to say, it is well worth exploring. There are an amazing number of resources that can be downloaded from the WWW. One of the easiest ways to find what you want on the ere you can download them. ============================================================================= WWW (the World-Wide Web) is accessible directly from Virginia Pen's internet menu's, or you can access it from UNIX by typing "lynx." Lynx is a text t, and Apple II software is usually available at caltech and grind (grind was set up specifically for Apple II software). The usenet list "info-mac" (available directly from Virginia Pen) lists hundreds of new programs available every week and tells you wh for the downloading. This includes Shakespeare plays, the Bible, Edgar Rice Burroughs novels, lists of thousands of films by director, and hundreds of other things. It's really worth exploring around. Mac software can be found at apple, caltech, and funeupload a text file to it using kermit. To use kermit, simply type "kermit" then send your file by typing "receive home.html" and sending your home page (which you have already written ahead). The public html directory has to be made publicly accessible, or no one will be able to get to it. To do this, type these commands from unix: chmod 711 $HOME chmod 644 $HOME/public html Don't ask why this works, it just does.
