In order to accomplish this: Purchase the following: 1. A small plastic box (that has an aluminum side panel thatn the proper configuration. Then put it back together. Each time you want to change the configuration, the above steps have to be followed. In order to alleviate this problem it became very obvious that if I wanted maximum use of the TITAN ///+IIe Emthis operation accomplished is that the boards and the A/// can be damaged. You may have to remove the monitor, open up the A///, pull the cables off, remove the ProFile, remove the jumper cables from the boards, pull the boards, place the jumper(s) iilize the slots to their fullest without moving the jumpers around, which means opening up the A/// and pulling out the boards, so that the jumpers could be moved if you HAD to configure the slots to fit your needs as they arise. If you cannot fit your answers on the card, fire up your A/// and write us a letter, but do it TODAY. Question 1 is, Why do you belong to ATUNC? Simply,t disagree. Everyone who uses the computer and wants to use it better can be of help. The letters by Robert Howe and Mike Schroeder (printed later in this issue) are perfect examples of what we are looking for. Even if you can't write answers, write questions. The worst thing that can happen to you is that we won't know the answer to your question, but usually there is a way to get everything done. At the time they were appealing to users looking for the expanded memory and business soof their systems. Everybody has eagerly awaited the latest 'fix' that would free them from dependence on outmoded "original" software, no longer adequate without expensive upgrading. The individual's approach to a solution is generally a grope in the d peripherals have been done by members intent on sharing their knowledge with the membership. A breath of fresh air??? Of course!! Especially, when new acquisitions (while solving some previous operational problems) do not improve the users' knowledge trend the organization is following. Explorations of member-owned software (Advanced Visicalc, a variety of word processing, telecommunications and integrated databases), and live demonstrations of how to strip down the Apple ///, disc-drives and otherrnival atmosphere at least guarantees a rapt audience for those interested in the current subject matter of a meeting. "Since a small nucleus started meeting in September, 1984, a continually widening interest is being shown in meeting formats and theDemonstrations are done by members themselves with a view to explaining either hard or software operation and usage or assisting others in obtaining better use of programs that still border on the arcane after months of ineffectual ownership. Does this sound similar to what you have undoubtedly gone through since acquiring your Apple ///? There is no universal panacea for our illnesses. However, A.T.U.N.C. members, a majority of whom were rectly - which for some reason didn't gibe - and the concomitant frustrations of sequencing routines that never seemed to work when you did them, whereas others you talked with had no trouble, offered advice or explained to you what you were doing wrong e all waged with them during the "getting-acquainted" process I think we have all gone, or are going, through. "Those apparently lost hours that found you desperately trying to reconcile what you had done with what you knew you had read about doing corftware already adapted to these machines. With S.O.S. and a multitude of drivers (programmed commands for operating peripherals and performing special functions) they were the hottest thing on the block. They still are, regardless of the battles we havarkness of computer world offerings which these days SELDOM include much for the owners of Apple ///s. As a group, unique in our sharing of a special knowledge that we have equipment and software that is superior, but often a stranger to us, we believe that this educational approach is the only way to enhance our investments. "The mutuality of interests, similarity of problems (unique to all computer users' groups), and, desire to more effectively utilize what we all consider a computer engineeris have not been increasing in attendance. Perhaps the meeting location (with its poor parking) is a factor, but the same people seem to attend every meeting. The majority of the work for ATUNC is done by the same small group of members. We must all contribute so that collectively and individually we all feel we are getting at leasxpand our membership base. To expand our membership base we need to have programs and newsletters which meet the needs of the members, so please give us feedback on how we are doing or what you would like to see us do. We are a voluntary organization ution states no person shall receive any compensation for services to the organization. We rely on volunteer help. This tends to make the programs educational rather than sales oriented. To continue our growth and development, we need to continue to ee group members making presentations have, generally aided the novice and challenged the "expert". There is no fee and no one is required to do anything to attend the meetings. Our hosts, Gensler & Associates, have been most accomodating. Our constittly consists of a dedicated and intelligent group of individuals. Our membership includes but is not limited to Medical Doctors, lawyers, engineers, architects, accountants, business people, and programers. The meetings are educational in nature. The more you put into an organization the more you will get out of it. Every little bit helps, ngible aspect of comradeship among the members. We the American society is individualist and alienating. Each family is self sufficient, seldom needs to visit its neighbors. But we need common interest to sustain contacts, such as a church, a sport. A c, all free. After struggled for several months, I found out Pascal was not for me. I gave up. I did not waste any $$$, a little detail essential to a septuagenarian. 3). Even more important than the tangible benefits as memtioned above, there is the intaide, it still costs a fortune. If we belong to a Users group, the group's public domain library or a fellow member may help us get it at no, or very little cost. In my own case, once I was learning Pascal. Wayne Schotten let me copy his disks and manualstill the only way handy and cheap. I remember once I placed a disk in driver 2, no reading, try again, no reading. Immediately, I called Rod Whitten. He said: try driver 1! It worked! Wonderful. 2). Often we need a common software, yet, if buy it outs). The hardware is still too complicated, the software too tricky, liable to go wrong at any time in too many occasions. There are not many repair shops around. We need help each other among members, just to be able to carry on our daily jobs, and it is srd Brand Pencil Users Association, nor Underwood Typewriter Users Group. But we still have an Apple /// Users Group. At the present stage of development, our group, or any other computer users group, has technical necessities to sustain its survival: 1s and types are available that the users do not find much common interest in this tool. By that time, the users groups die, unless the members find new and more permanently sustainable mutual interests among themselves. That's why there are no more Standa to trade with each other. This statement holds true when pencils, screw drivers, bicycles, typewriters, etc. were invented. But the initial fad will not last, either because the usage becomes a routine, has no more excitement, or too many brands, makeAPPLE THREE USERS OF NORTHERN CALIFORNIA VOLUME 5 NUMBERS 5, May 1988 EDITORIAL The Mission of a Users Group When a new type of tools is invented, its users love it. Every member of this group has a skill that we can use. 4) Thank Ed Suttles for the excellent job he is doing by giving him an idea for a presentation or better yet volunteering to give a presentation. If everyone in the group did just oneso in the next month give this group a push in the right direction by: 1) Sending Bill Stone an article or a question. Give him too much to publish in one month, a problem he would welcome. 2) Coming to the meeting. 3) Volunteering to help on a omputer is a good medium. It's complex enough to challenge an individual's cleverness, yet small and cheap enough to be afford in any family. In my particular case, when I bought a UPIC (universal parallel interface card) from Sun Remarketing, I did not know how to install it. I called Jason Yuen. It took him 3 hours to help me install it.
