However, at the data file level they are totally compatible. A database crds for an Epson will normally work on a Star printer. However, if you have a different printer that does not have exactly the same control codes, then you need to set up the one custom printer allowed in 3EZP. To set up a custom printer, go to the mainustom printer. The first 10 printers have the necessary control codes built into them to support different type pitch, line spacing, super- and sub-script, and bold print. The first thing to try is one of the noncustom printers. For example, the comman APPLE THREE USERS OF NORTHERN CALIFORNIA VOLUME 3 NUMBER 10 OCTOBER 1986 THE CUSTOM PRINTER IN 3EZPIECES Three EZ Pieces allows you to select up to 3 different printers at the print menu. Can 3 EZPieces read in data from other programs. A1. Yes, one of 3EZP's real strengths is the ability to import data from almost any other program. The word processor cnd for repairing the damage was to create a new blank database with a matching number of fields and labels and then copy, via the clipboard, the entire contents of the file into the newly created database. Now with your information in the new database, the file once it has been damaged in this way. The solution is never to create more than 7 report formats. You could run a report with a sort (OA R) on the field "City" and then count the cities in each group, but there is a much better way. You simply run a report in 3EZPieces using your existing database and get a c otherwise unused field. To make this more useful, I'll give an example of how to use it and then an explanation of exactly how to set up your database. Say you have a client list and one of the fields is the city the client works in. You would like toalways done manually before, that is count the number of items in a group. I discovered it while working on a lengthy word processing project. The project involved cutting an 3EZP, reading it into WJ and then setting up the form letter with the appropriate variables. This is easier than it may sound. The first step is to create the ASCII file. For this purpose we will assume that you already have a 3EZP database file that includes last name, first name, address, city, state and zip. These are the variables that you will include in the form letter that you wish to send. First, create a table style report, Open Apple P (OA P), option 2. Delete all fields from the report you are using Discourse to spool your print documents, you will spool enough to fill the queue and then the keyboard will lock up until the queue is no longer full. From the Print Form menu, you will see that Print Form has the ability to read PFS Filed1/data1 for the pathname. Make sure your printer is on when you do this as WJ assumes you are ready to print. If you are using single sheet paper, include a PAUSE (ESC Shift 8) at the top of your form letter to give you time to change the paper. If ic keypad that you normally use to print with in WJ. This will load the Print Form menu onto the screen (you must have the WJ disk in drive 1, if you are using floppy disks). To use the ASCII file, data1, you type option 1 for ASCII format, and then ., 1986 (assuming that you have a clock installed or have set the date during this working session). With the form letter done, you are now ready to print. With the letter on your screen type Closed Apple Period. The Period must is the one on the numeroth be the same as a is not equal to A. As WJ is case sensitive. As long as we are using predefined variables in WJ, at the top of the form letter you can put: @$MONTH& @$DAY#&, @$YEAR& which would print out the month, day and year like this: July 7an Francisco, CA 94111 Dear John, In our last correspondence ... The next six lines must be the variable names that will be used in the Word Juggler form letter. These variable names cannot have any spaces within them. For example, I'll use LNAME, FNAME, ADDRESS, CITY, STATE, ZIP. The first seven lins to include an asterisk (*) before the file name, i.e. *.d1/temp or *.ram/temp. This file must be "prepared" for use with Word Jugglers form merging variables. The first line of the file must be the number of variables in the data base. In our exampe ram disk and to be able to reboot another program, one must have a program selector like Catalyst or Selector. This is necessary because a reboot will clear the ram disk memory. Next, boot Word Juggler and read in the ASCII file. The "trick" here i(with OA D) that you do not want in the ASCII file. Print the ASCII file to disk (OA P, option 4). This could be a file on your hard disk, floppy or ram disk. For example, print to .d1/temp or to .ram/temp. You are now done with 3EZPieces. To use ths and Quickfiles directly. Even though the 3EZP database is a descendent of Quickfile, you cannot read the 3EZP database files directly, although this would be a fairly easy upgrade for Quark to do. In summary, you must: 1) Create an ASCII file on a disk using OA P in 3EZPieces. 2) Read that file into WJ with an * preceding the filename. 3) Prepare the "header" on this file and save it to disk. 4) Load your form letter which has the same variables as defined in the header. 5 VOLUME 3 NUMBER 2 FEBRUARY 1986 Q2.
